Opportunities!

So, if you have been following the blog, hopefully you have seen and watched our journey as a family of six! I have spoken a lot about why I host. But now I want to talk about the opportunities (or lack thereof) these boys and so many others have.

A number of the children who have been hosted this winter session by HOW are eligible for adoption and a number of the families that are participating are adoption minded. Of the 19 participating, 4 are being adopted at the writing of this blog. While not all families are adoption minded, they are certainly helping in any way they can. Some even become adoption minded after meeting and loving these kids.

Both Edwin and José Manuel (JM) are not eligible to be adopted. Why? Because the US does not allow adoptions to take place after age 16. On a side note, I can't adopt anyway as the DR does not allow single women to adopt. Anyways, these boys will return to a country with limited opportunities as they get close to aging out of the system. But... there is still hope. Did you know that you could consider sponsoring these kids or a number of many others aging out of the system to help them finish their high school diploma? Or even to finish a college degree? "The Dominican Republic already has troubling numbers of people living in poverty and who lack literacy and a high school degree. Fewer than 10 percent of its 3.7 million children will graduate from high school, according to the organization Save the Children," (Educating Children Proves Daunting Challenge, n.d.).

Did you know that the orphanage that they attend provides them with schooling? However, it is not forever.

As I wind down my time with them, I know that it will not be goodbye. I will see them again. But, they deserve so much more. As do so many of the other children at the orphanage. Please reach out to me. I will gladly put you in touch with someone to help!
